Tubular Directors

Post drivers are always supplied with a director to keep the driver on the post and make sure it wont come of the post as you drive it down. The problem is, tubular directors often require you to change the internal centring collar if you want to drive larger MaxY or BEEFY picket and they prevent you from driving a picket in with wire in the upper holes of the picket. This also means a driver director may not have internal guides to allow you to keep the holes of picket perpendicular to the fence line as you dive it in.

Fabricated Directors

To get around this, some companies fabricate the director by laser cutting steel plates and welding them together. Fabricated directors solve the wire problem and allow you to both drive and direct any post without needing to change a collar however, the laser cutting leaves the internal plates with sharp edges that often grab the picket as you slide the director on or off. This issue is not such a problem if you are driving one or two pickets, but if your driving pickets all day, it becomes a real issue.

Safety First

From the safety perspective, laser cut plates provide openings in all directions that make it easy to accidentally put a finger between the hammer and the post adding a potentially dangerous feature to the post driver.
